Father’s Day Sunday Sail

Had a lovely sail with the family for Father’s Day in the sunshine.

Its a rarity to have everyone together on the boat and we had ideal conditions. Just the right amount of wind to keep Madsu moving and sunshine for days. With an inflow into Howe Sound, we tacked out towards Bowen Island, then an hour later tacked back. Very chill.

There’s a trimaran out our marina called Valkyrie, and they were gearing up as we left. They got sails up in the sound shortly after we did, and quickly left us in the dust.

We did experience a bit of Fata Morgana, also knowns as ‘superior image’. This is when objects on the horizon appear to be floating above the water. It’s an optical illusion you can read more about on the Wikipedia page. Sometimes the objects can appear inverted. As you can see in the photo below, we were seeing bits of boats and some of the Gulf Islands floating just above the horizon.

We didn’t break any speed records, but with the 150% jib and full main up, we did a decent 4 knots to weather with very little heel.
