The Poor Man’s Tropics

20090728_fish2

It won’t win any National Geographic photo contest, but here’s what I did to get this shot.

I leaned over Madsu’s starboard side while at the dock on Keats Island and submerged my Pentax Optio W30 about six inches into the water and clicked the shutter.

Then I went back to sipping my coffee and reading my book.

Another tough day at the office.

Pentax seems to have upgraded these significantly since I bought mine on the advice of a counter guy at London Drugs Park Royal.  I’m more than happy with it for worry free shooting in the water and when snowboarding.

Beat the Heat

20090726_whytecliff_park

To escape the heat, EB and I headed out for an evening sail, leaving the dock around 7.

There was a sweet and cool breeze from the south and with just a ripple on the water we had a lovely sail.

We reached by Whitecliff Park on our way back – we could hear the kids playing on the beach, and the rocks were covered in folks sitting out in the breeze, waiting for the sun to set.

Ducking In

20090725_stormy

I managed to head in and get the boat settled before the thunderstorms building on the North Shore turned into the real thing.

We haven’t had rain in weeks and tonight we’re getting lots of lighting and rolling thunder.

Going and Going

20090725_beating_with_pleasure

Another Saturday afternoon, another inflow in Howe Sound.

With only a light chop, Madsu’s doing a comfy 5 knots to weather with the 100% jib and full main.  On days like this I could just keep going and going…

Granville Island Water Taxi

20090725_giwt

The Bowen Island Express – Granville Island Water Taxi‘s regular commute between downtown Vancouver and Bowen Island.

Here it is, outbound Snug Cove to Granville Island on Saturday afternoon.  That’s Bowen in the background.  Shot with my D70 while running dead downwind in the opposite direction.

Sparkling Spectacular

20090724_sparkling-sound

The water catches the afternoon light and sparkles from Howe Sound all the way to Vancouver Island in the distance.

You can tell it’s really summer now, with more and more cruisers out, dinghy in tow.

Fridaylicious

20090724_to_weather

Another perfect weather day in Howe Sound.  With an 8-10 knot inflow this afternoon, Madsu felt downright spry beating out of the Sound into Georgia Straight.

Cape Roger Curtis

20090717_cape_roger_curtis

Cape Roger Curtis, off our port side, as we sail the Georgia Straight towards Vancouver.

The land on this end of Bowen Island is privately owned, and has been the subject of controversy lately.

Read more about that on James Glave’s web site, here’s the land owner’s web site, and here’s the Cape Roger Curtis trust website.

(Island politics – one hazard to navigation you don’t have to worry about if you stay on the boat !)

Vancouver Over Yonder

20090717_vancouver_10nm

We’re about ten nautical miles NW of Vancouver, in the Straight of Georgia.

The land left of frame is Bowen Island.

You can see First Narrows and Lion’s Gate Bridge just starting to open to the right of Bowen.

Further right from there is Stanley Park, and directly behind Stanley Park you can see Burnaby Mountain.

And to the right, Vancouver’s skyline.

Life is a Postcard

20090717_keats_hats

This is the ramp to the floats at Plumper Cove, Keats Island.

This couple is heading to their tiny dinghy for a row back to their Kelt 760.

You can see part of Madsu under her boom tent, lower left frame.
