Just a minute of sunny sailing aboard Madsu in Howe Sound. Shot 23 July 2011 with a GoPro on a static clamp on the pushpit.
Waiting for Wind
A wait with a million dollar view. This is in Howe Sound near Keats Island. August can be hot and still, but it’s all good.
As good a time as any for lunch, so the sails are down and I’m just drifting enjoying the sunshine and a freshly made sandwich.

If You Could Read My Mind
Cruising on a small sailboat means making good use of available space.

When I’m heading out for more than a day sail, I have move all my sailbags (and the deflacted Zodiac) to the foredeck. I’ve got room just ahead of the mast to stash this stuff, well tied down, and it doesn’t interfere with the jib at all.
The bonus is the sailbags make for a comfy recliner for watching the goings on at the anchorage, or reading an ebook. I have been known to nod off once or twice.
Photo is a still from a GoPro video shot at Plumper Cove, Keats Island, in Howe Sound, August 2010.
How Long is Summer?
The answer to that important quesiton is in the video.
Shot in glorious 4:5, on July 16, 2009, in Howe Sound, on a wobbly handheld Pentax point and shoot camera. The island in the background is Bowen. A few weeks later I dropped the camera over the side, it’s somewhere on the bottom at Plumper Cove off Keats Island.
Classic Beauty

Lazee Gal hails from Vancouver BC. With the sun glinting off her windshield, she’s pulling in to Plumper Cove, Keats Island. A real head turner, I watched her skipper bring her in to a perfect stop at the dock.
Some info on Lazee Gal found here…
“Hi there,
Lazee Gal is my family’s boat. It was built in 1953 for the Dueck family (the car company, yes) by Thorton Grenfell. It is 64′ including the swim-grid, and is Mahogany over oak frames. My great-grandfather, who is a Bentall, bought it, and it now belongs to my grandmother and her two brothers. Any other questions, feel free to ask me.”
Clouds over Passage
Passage Island is at the entrance to Howe Sound. It has a West Vancouver postal code, but is overseen by the Island Trust. I
When you take the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo you’ll pass the island on your port side just before the ferry turns to starboard to head across the Strait of Georgia. This shot is while sailing out of Queen Charlotte Channel into the Strait along the same path the ferry takes.
