Winging It

Had a lovely day out on the water – missed the sun earlier in the day but it didn’t really matter.  A light northerly outflow from Howe Sound made for a leisurely pace – just a few other sailboats out in the sound enjoying the day.

Heading dead down for a bit on my way back to Fisherman’s Cove after beating up the sound for a ways.

Fall Sunshine

Thunderbird Marina in West Vancouver (at Fisherman’s Cove) looking pretty lovely this afternoon.

Passage Island

Passage Island straight ahead marks the entrance to Howe Sound.

In the distance, Vancouver Island a few of our fabled Gulf Island – they’re the lower ones (darker) on the horizon. That’s Gabriola to the right of Passage Island and Valdez on the left.  The higher ridges in the distance are part of Vancouver Island.  And to the far right of the frame you can see the tip of Bowen Island (Cowan’s Point).

Slow Hand

It was a day for a light touch on the tiller – and a lot of patience.  Lovely fall sky and still shorts weather in Howe Sound today.  We didn’t go anywhere fast, but then again, what does it matter ?

Sultry September

Record high temperatures for Southern British Columbia this September.  We had a gentle southerly inflow in Howe Sound this afternoon. Most of the homeward bound sailboats were motoring back to Vancouver, but we had a lovely leisurely sail.

Howe Sound perfection.

Fast and Warm

Our summer weather has been pretty spotty, but today the sun was out and there was some heat in it.

With a South wind blowing into Howe Sound Madsu was feeling sprightly, doing 5.5 knots to weather with her 100% jib and full main.

Can’t really get enough of this.  There’s a short video here.

This is a still from the GoPro HD camera I had strapped to the pushpit.

Lazy Afternoon

\

Heavy overcast in Howe Sound with a very light outflow wind.  Madsu’s doing a lazy 3 knots to weather – faster than I expected given the light wind, but there’s no chop, so we skimmed along smartly.

I made it back to the dock just in time to avoid the drizzle that finally arrived after threatening all afternoon.

Long Weekend Warms Up

We finally got some warm weather – and a lovely day for a day sail in Howe Sound.   The wind was a bit flukey by the time we got down to the dock, but we had a lovely low key afternoon sail.

You can see there’s still lots of snow in the local mountains.

Howe Sound Beauty, Eh

It seems like an annual rite of passage.

A gorgeous day, a nice breeze and just a wee bit of chop.

I hoist the main and in the process my had goes overboard.

Hat Overboard Drill came too late.

It was a good hat, and had served me well, and I’ll miss it.   Looks like I’ll need to break-in a new one.

Lovely sail today, a classic Howe Sound day with 10-12 knot inflow wind.
